Umsonst ("In Vain") by Wilhelm Schulz from Simplicissimus Volume I No. 31 October 1896. Bottom 1895.

  1. What an unsettling piece. I know "fallen women" were a pop culture obsession at this time, but the idea of doing a strip about a mother who prostitutes herself in the (vain) hope of saving her baby strikes me as truly macabre. The final panel packs a wallop.
